What to Expect in Sarawak

CULTURE

Sarawak is home to 27 ethnic groups, each with its unique traditions, languages, and lifestyles. Visitors can explore longhouses, experience traditional crafts like weaving of Pua Kumbu and beadwork, listening to enchanting tunes of Sarawak’s indigenous lute and witness ancient rituals such as Gawai Kenyalang.

ADVENTURE

Sarawak offers a range of adventures such as mountain climbs, diving, waterfall trekking, and kayaking amidst its breathtaking natural landscapes. Discover UNESCO World Heritage sites like Gunung Mulu National Park, a challenging 2,300-meter limestone karst formation. The trek involves a steep 2.4 km climb (11 km round trip), often requiring a 3-day/2-night expedition.

NATURE

Sarawak is home to a diverse range of endemic species, many of which are unique to Borneo’s rich ecosystems. Iconic wildlife includes the Bornean Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey, Bornean Keeled Pit Viper and the striking Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing butterfly. Sarawak’s rich biodiversity thrives in protected areas like Gading, Bako, and Batang Ai National Parks, just to name a few.

FOOD

Sarawak is renowned for its rich and diverse culinary heritage, shaped by its multi-ethnic population. Its cuisine blends traditional rainforest ingredients with cultural influences, creating a unique and flavorful gastronomic experience. One of Sarawak’s most iconic dishes is Sarawak Laksa. The late Anthony Bourdain famously dubbed it the “Breakfast of the Gods” after tasting it in Kuching.

FESTIVALS

From world-renowned music festivals to indigenous harvest celebrations, Sarawak’s festival scene offers a unique blend of heritage, music, and community spirit. Key festivals include the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), showcasing global music and cultural performances in a stunning rainforest setting. For cultural celebrations, Gawai Dayak (1st June) is a significant harvest festival for the indigenous Dayak people, marked by traditional rituals, music, and feasting. Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri are also widely celebrated, showcasing Sarawak’s multicultural harmony.
